At the end of the first quarter of 2018, King County is leading the way in building permit activity in the region, with single family permits up 19 percent and multifamily permits up 25 percent compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, single-family permits have dropped 19 percent in Snohomish County and multifamily permits are down 58 percent year-over-year.  For the three-county region as a whole (King, Snohomish, and Pierce counties), permits are up 7 percent and 9 percent, respectively.

The Legislature's $43.7 billion two-year budget—which took negotiations within hours of a partial state government shutdown—is signed, but some lawmakers haven't had quite enough brinkmanship for the year.

Now the state's $4 billion capital budget, which provides the funding for construction of public schools, colleges, universities, community and youth facilities, parks, environmental projects, and more, is being held up by the Republican-controlled Senate until lawmakers can resolve a disagreement over water rights for private development.

Supply of Homes for Sale Struggling to Keep Up with Demand

With our region's continued strong demand for housing, King and Snohomish counties' supply of housing inventory for sale fell to just three weeks. That is notably low in light of the fact that many analysts consider a four-to-six month level as an indicator of a healthy market. Meanwhile, both counties continued to see double-digit, year-over-year single family home price increases, reaching $425,000 in Snohomish County and nearly $600,000 in King County during March. In Seattle, the median single family home price rose to $700,000.
